Updated 5 December: The official Christmas programmes are now available for the following municipalities:

Adeje
Arona
Buenavista del Norte
Granadilla
Güímar
Icod de los Vinos
La Orotava
Puerto de la Cruz
Santa Cruz
Santa Ursula
Santiago del Teide

Updated 1 December: Puerto de la Cruz will hold its official Christmas lights switch on tonight at 7.30pm in the la Plaza de la Iglesia.

Updated 29 November: Adeje and Arona will be turning on the Christmas lights throughout the municipalities tomorrow, Friday 30 November. In Adeje, lights will be switched on at 8.30 in the Plaza de España at the top of Calle Grande next to the Ayuntamiento. Throughout Arona there are some 30 areas with displays and the Ayuntamiento is holding three formal events in the main towns, Valle San Lorenzo, Los Cristianos, and Las Galletas. The first will be in the El Puente area of Valle San Lorenzo at 6.30pm, then moving to Los Cristianos at 7.30pm in the plaza de Los Caídos on the Paseo Marítimo around the harbour, and finally at 8.30pm in the newly opened plaza Paulino Suances in Las Galletas. The switching on the Valle San Lorenzo lights is timed to coincide with the San Andrés chestnuts event whose details I posted HERE.

Original post 22 November: Santa Cruz will turn on its Christmas lights today and the festive season will be underway. The big switch-on will take place from 7pm in the Plaza del Príncipe (get to Teatro Guimerá on the tram, and from the tram stop walk back down to the theatre, then turn down the side street on the left opposite: within one block you will be at the plaza). The Ayuntamiento says that around two and a half million LED lights will form the centrepiece of the city’s Christmas decorations, with a full programme of 200 or so events for Christmas.

It is in Santa Cruz too, of course, that the Christmas Day live concert is performed: always a sell-out, it takes place in the harbour and is broadcast live on television. And apart from the lights, and the official events and concerts for Tenerife’s festive season celebrations, do keep an eye out wherever you are for a belén, one of the famous nativity scenes. Most places will have one, many places have competitions between several locally, and perhaps one of the biggest and best will be La Orotava’s, and you can watch its construction live on webcam – see HERE.
